SUU Catalog Description: A general education course for non-science majors. The basic principles of geology are introduced here by examining geologic hazards including earthquakes, volcanoes, and landslides.
Between earthquakes, landslides, subsidence, and rockfalls, we have plenty of hazards to navigate right here in southern Utah. Below are three photos of some big events. On the left is the 2014 rock fall in Rockville, Utah, that tragically crushed a house and killed two people. The middle photo is of the Sentinel Slide in Zion Canyon that dammed the Virgin River several thousand years ago. The photo on the right is of two Utah Geological Survey mappers explaining the landslide hazards along Highway 14 where the most recent landslide caused a road closure for 9 months in 2012.
